| CARMEN meeting on Physical Activity and Non-communicable diseases | February 2 |
PAHO Non-communicable Diseases Program is convening a meeting of the Network on Physical Activity in the Americas and the CARMEN Physical Activity Working Group on February 2, 2002 in Miami, Florida. The purpose of the meeting is to identify the lines of action for key public policies to implement physical activity as an intervention strategy for the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

| WorldNet Cable TV - Special Broadcast on Physical Activity | April 4 |
A special broadcast of a roundtable discussion on physical activity will be aired LIVE on WorldNet Cable TV on Thurday, April 4, 2002. The Regional Advisor on Healthy Eating and Active Living within the PAHO Food and Nutrition Program has gathered a select panel of technical experts to share this important topic with the public (Mrs. Sandra Matsudo, Agita Sao Paulo and Dr. Carlos Crespo, State University of New York, Buffalo State). This special presentation will detail the importance of physical activity and its benefits to individual and community health, as well as other essential facts about physical activity. Stay tuned!

| World Health Day 2002 Celebration at PAHO HQ | April 5 |
 PAHO Division of Health Promotion and Protection, Food and Nutrition Program, is organizing the World Health Day 2002 Celebration at PAHO HQ on Friday, April 5, 2002. The celebration will consist of a panel of presenters on the topic of physical activity. Two programs have been nominated to be recognized for their extensive innovative work in promoting physical activity: Agita Sao Paulo in Brazil and Vida Chile.
All of the PAHO staff and friends of PAHO in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area are invited to participate in this celebration!

| PAHO Sixth Annual Walk for Health | April 6 |
The PAHO Staff and Family Associations, with the support of the PAHO Division of Health Promotion and Protection, Food and Nutrition Program, is organizing the Sixth Annual Walk for Health, which will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2002. This annual event takes on even more meaning this year with the WHD 2002 theme of "Move for Health!", along with the PAHO Centennial Celebration. The Walk starts at 10:00 a.m. at the entrance of the PAHO HQ building in Washington, D.C. and takes its participants alongside the sites of the U.S. capital. See you there, rain or shine!

| Toolkit on Promoting Physical Activity and Exercise for Older Adults | |
PAHO Division of Health Promotion and Protection, Aging and Health Unit is developing a toolkit for promoting physical activity for older adults. The kit is part of a strategy to sensitize and educate the community on the importance of physical activity in the health of the 60+ years population. The toolkit is aimed at the promotion of physical activity and exercise for older adults in both primary care and community settings in the Region of the Americas. The toolkit materials, including a Regional blueprint for the promotion of physical activity for older adults, are currently under development and will be made available on CD-ROMs later this year.

The World Health Organization is holding a large ceremony to celebrate World Health Day 2002 with Agita Sao Paulo in Brazil as the local host institution.

| New deadline for application to the Active Cities Contest: April 26, 2002 | April 26 |
In response to many requests from cities and municipalities, PAHO and the CDC have decided to extend the deadline for submissions to April 26, 2002.

| Announcement of the winners of the Active Cities Contest | June 5 |
The six winning cities from Latin America, the Caribbean, US and Canada will be posted on the PAHO and CDC Web sites.

| Award Ceremony for the Active Cities Contest | October 20-24 |
The six winners of the Active Cities Contest will be recognized during an official Award Ceremony at the Health Promotion Forum in the Americas in Santiago, Chile.
