Advances and Challenges

There is a good chance that El Salvador will achieve most of the goals as can bee seen in Cuadro 1.1 of El Salvador 's MDG report. However the country faces many challenges including the threat of international gangs such as the Mara Salvatrucha MS13. The report points out that while it is not doing as well as Costa Rica , it is doing better than most of the other countries in the region that have a similar GDP. Some of the areas where El Salvador has seen improvements in the period 1990-2000 include infant mortality and in children under five years of age, where there has been an improvement of between 16 and 21 percentages points respectively. Also there was an increase in the number of births attended by professionals and in the number of contraceptives used by women. Having said this, other areas show stagnation such as child malnutrition and increases in HIV/AIDS and dengue. These simply show that work still needs to be done by the government in El Salvador in order to be able to achieve all of the MDG by 2015.
