Belize Most of the country is operating under normal conditions, except for the Southern Districts of Stann Creek and Toledo. In Stann Creek the communities mostly affected are: Monkey River, Placencia and Independence. In Monkey there are only two structures standing (health center and community center). In Placencia 95% of houses destroyed or damaged. Independence reported serious damage, houses and electrical posts down. Bella VIsta tremendous damage. External assistance will most likely be needed. Today, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the director of health services and the PAHO/WHO Disaster Focal Point and health services specialist in Belize flew over the affected areas. The hospital in Belize City is due to reopen this afternoon. Belize City was scarcely affected. Belmopan not affected. The PAHO/WHO office, which moved to Belmopan as the storm approached, is due to return to Belize City this afternoon. Source: PAHO/WHO Belize and the National Emergency Management OrganizationGuatemala Hurricane Iris affected the area around Petén, the municipalities of Poptun and San Luis Petén, along the southern border with Belize. Electric power, and radio and telephone service was lost. The hospital in Poptun lost parts of its roof, but this did not affect its ability to function. There were no personal injuries reported.In Izabal, winds were strong but rainfall was moderate. By 6 a.m. today, the sky had cleared and it was no longer raining. The situation was much the same in Zacapa, where electricity was lost yesterday evening. However, there were no casualties. The Ministry of Health at all levels -- central and local -- rapidly activated their emergency response plan and strengthened coordination with departmental governors, mayors and military leaders in the affected departments. PAHO/WHO is coordinating with Guatemala's National Emergency Committee, the National Institute of Meteorology and the United Nations System. |
