|World Health Day – April 7th Antimicrobial resistance: no action today, no cure tomorrow|
El Paso, TX, April 7th, 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 since 1947, to mark the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). Each year, the Organization selects a key global health issue and organizes international, regional and local events on the Day and throughout the year to highlight the selected area.
World Health Day 2011 was focus on antimicrobial resistance and its global spread. Antimicrobial resistance threatens the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.
To underline this, the PAHO/WHO public awareness campaign included a special focus on the HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics. The PAHO/WHO called on governments and stakeholders to implement the policies and practices needed to prevent and counter the emergence of highly resistant superbugs, and to also provide appropriate care to those seriously affected by these microbes.
To commemorate WHD 2011, the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, the El Paso Department of Public Health, the Health District II Health Services of the State of Chihuahua, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization United States-Mexico Border Office, among others, have joined forces to present the antimicrobial resistance and its global spread, as well as the current status of sexually transmitted diseases and some of its comobordities in the United States-Mexico border and the strategies being undertaken to fight towards its elimination.
