Investing in Mental Health in the U.S.-Mexico Border

El Paso, TX, October 25, 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – According to research, more than 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental disorders. In addition, poor mental health is associated with rapid social change, stressful work conditions, gender discrimination, social exclusion, unhealthy lifestyle, risks of violence and physical ill health and human rights violations.

Financial and human resources allocated for mental health are inadequate worldwide.  Many countries have less than one mental health specialist per one million populations. Even a considerable part of the limited resources is spent on large mental hospitals and not for services delivered through community and primary health care.

As part of the XI Binational Health Week celebration and the World Mental Health Day, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health, the Consulate General of Mexico, and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/ WHO) U.S.-Mexico Border Office held a binational panel to learn more about mental health, specially in the Ciudad Juárez and El Paso area. This year’s theme was: “Investing in mental health.” The event was held on October 10, 2011 at the City of El Paso Department of Public Health.

The panel was comprised by Dr. Maria Teresa Cerqueira, Chief from the PAHO/WHO U.S.-Mexico Border Office, who talked about the worldwide mental health view and about recommendations and solutions from PAHO/ WHO; Dr. Marcelo Rodriguez, Chief Medical Officer from El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation, who focused on the current mental health situation and services in El Paso and M.C.I.D David Castañeda, Director from Centro de Desarrollo y Atención Terapéutica (CEDAT), who focused on the mental health community integral model in Ciudad Juárez.
