|Government grant will provide drinking water for colonia on El Paso County|
El Paso, TX, January 26, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) – During years the community of Colonia Revolucion located on the Northeast of Horizon City has been living without drinking water on their homes, but thanks to a grant provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the work of Texas state agencies, and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization’s (PAHO/WHO) technical cooperation residents from this colonia will soon have this precious element.
On January 20th, 2012, Congressman Silvestre Reyes, (D-TX) announced that the USDA awarded a $3, 111,500 grant and a $500,000 loan that be use to provide drinking water to 80 homes at Colonia Revolucion. “The funds for this project are critical since they will provide potable water to the residents of Colonia Revolucion,” mentioned Reyes.
PAHO/WHO United States –Mexico Border Office has conducted research about the quality of drinking water and sanitation on West Texas’colonias. Research reveals the complexity of these services on the most vulnerable communities of the region and provides information to impulse more equitable and sustainable policies on water and sanitation. “If we can secure access to potable water for all the people, regardless if you live in the city or rural areas, we will be successful in combating various diseases and the result will be a healthier, stronger more vibrant community, “added Reyes.
According to estimates from the Office of the Texas Secretary of State in a 2010 report, there are 353 colonias with approximately 45,000 residents without water and sanitation services. Furthermore, there are 62 colonias with approximately 4,000 residents who are unaware of what kind of services are there in their communities.
