Promoting self-health care in children and teenagers at Ciudad Juarez’s schools

Ciudad Juarez, MX, March 2, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) – It is important that health care begins at an early age that is why several organizations jointly launched a pilot program in elementary and secondary schools in Ciudad Juarez for children and adolescents. The Pilot Program “ConVive con la Salud” or in English Coexist with Health is an initiative launched by several institutions including the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez (UACJ), the Ministry of Health of Chihuahua, the Undersecretary of Education, Culture, and Sports, and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) U.S.-Mexico Border Office.

The purpose of “ConVive con la Salud” is to establish appropriate, concrete, and assertive actions in promoting self-care health in children and teenagers. Thanks to this program, children and adolescents with hearing problems, posture problems such as flat feet, mouth problems, vision problems and malnutrition, combined with psychological problems were diagnosed.

To date more than five thousand students have been analyzed by interns from the various colleges of Medicine from the UACJ to determine how many cases should be treated promptly. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health will continue a series of actions to be performed so that each school can be hoisted a white flag and is certified as one of the "Healthy Schools". In addition, PAHO/WHO provides technical advice and it plans to create Ecoclubes within the schools that are certified as "Healthy Schools."

An Ecoclub is an independent organization, directed and driven by the youth community. Promotes activities to improve the quality of life, contributes to the welfare of society, environmental preservation and a local sustainable development as well as training local leaders to identify, intervene and solve problems through active participation and involving the whole community: family, authorities, local and national organizations.
