El Paso, TX, April 6th, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) –The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) United States-Mexico Border Office in collaboration with KINT-Univision 26 and the City of El Paso Department of Public Health invite children ages 8 to 14 years old living in El Paso to be part of the Children’s City Council especial meeting to be televised on KINT Univision 26, Nuestra Frontera program.

The objective of the Children’s City Council is to inform the community of El Paso and decision makers of the Healthy Kids Healthy Communities Initiative (HKHC). One Mayor and 8 district representatives will be elected after essays are submitted and reviewed by a panel of health experts. The nine selected essay authors will be notified by April 25th and invited to participate to a training workshop on April 28th. They will then be sworn in as the El Paso Children’s City Council on May 8th, 2012 during a special session at the El Paso City Council Chambers.  The call will be open from April 1st to April 13, 2012, and it consists of writing a 1-2 pages mini-essay in English or in Spanish answering any of the following questions:

What is a healthy community?

What barriers do you need to overcome in order to live in a healthier community?

Kids can send their essay by mail or in person to PAHO/WHO’s office or upload it to the Healthy Kids blog page.

ABOUT HEALTHY KIDS HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Healthy Kids Healthy Communities is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that focuses on systems, policies and environmental strategies to support healthy eating and active living, especially among children who are at the highest risk for obesity. HKHC selected 50 community partnerships across the country to help them increase opportunities for physical activity and improve access to affordable healthy foods for children and families. This initiative is advancing RWJF’s efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015.
