|The United States Ecoclub Network celebrated World Water Day|
El Paso, TX, March 28, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) – With the presence of 72 people, the U.S. Ecoclub Network in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) U.S.-Mexico Border Office, and the National Park Service (NPS) successfully held the Water and Health workshop this past Saturday March 24th, 2012 at Chamizal Park.
Members and facilitators of the Ecoclubs had the opportunity to learn and reinforce their knowledge about the importance of water in health and food safety. They reviewed the characteristics of water in El Paso and the problems that colonias face to access the vital fluid, the main measures of hygiene that must be present, and to become aware about water conservation and the fact that they are in charge of the dissemination of this message to their families and their community.
In addition, the kids had the opportunity to interact with representatives of El Paso Water Utilities, the State of Texas Colonias Initiative, media, PAHO and facilitators from McKinleyville, California who came to learn the process and organization of the Ecoclubs in El Paso, as these serve as a reference for the rest of the border and the United States. Finally, the kids learned with a hands-on workshops on water and some recreational activities, all this provided by National Park Service.
An Ecoclub is an independent organization, directed and driven by the youth community. Promotes activities to improve the quality of life, contributes to the welfare of society, environmental preservation and a local sustainable development as well as training local leaders to identify, intervene and solve problems through active participation and involving the whole community: family, authorities, local and national organizations.
