Project title: PAHO/CIDA Project: “Improved Health and Increased Protection from Communicable Diseases for Women, Children, and Excluded Populations in situations of vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Executing Agency: PAHO/WHO Guyana
Implementing partner: Ministry of Health
Description of project
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) project, “Strengthened health systems based in primary health care in the region for children and excluded populations with a specific focus on women and girls” is aligned with the four (4) technical projects (Health Systems and Services, Communicable and non-communicable Diseases, Social and Environmental Determinants of Health, and Family and Community Health) that comprise the Biennial Work Plans (BWPs) for 2010-2011 and 2012-13 of the PAHO/WHO Guyana Country office (CO).
The 3-year project has two Intermediate Outcomes (IO):
The project targets all ten (10) administrative regions in Guyana; however, more emphasis is placed on hinterland Regions 1, 7, 8, and 9 (the indigenous Amerindian population), and the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (the national referral hospital GPHC), in Region 4. It aims to strengthen service delivery, the health workforce, and the collection, analysis, and use of disaggregated data to identify gender and human rights issues, and to strengthen national and sub-national capacity to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate appropriate interventions that respect cultural diversity, with the participation of the persons, communities, and institutions that are targeted. The project will be implemented in phases over a three-year period.
