Print E-mail

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Inter- American Development Bank conducted a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in the three different sub-regions - Georgetown, East Coast and East Bank Demerara. The MDA was conducted during the period 9 November – 9 December 2012 with two (2) weekends allotted to each sub-region.

The goal of the campaign was to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem in Guyana in keeping with Guyana commitment to meet the target for elimination set by the WHO of a reduction to less than 1% (90% reduction) by 2015.

In preparation for the MDA, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) supported activities utilizing the funds from the CIDA-PAHO project which was earmarked for this initiative. Activities supported include, training of pill distributors, training of health care providers to supervise packaging of pills, social mobilization and the recruitment of two (2) data entry clerks to populate the MDA database. Information gathered from the database has revealed a total of 16,975 households were visited; 66,898 accepted the drug regimen and 3,908 did not accept the drug regimen; 996 persons were ‘ineligible’ or under 2 years, pregnant/lactating or seriously ill and 1114 refused.

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) country office will continue to support MDA in Guyana.
