 Vision, Mission and Objectives

 Vision

A world of healthy people through the promotion and facilitation of scientific, evidence-informed and equitable policy-making and practices.

Mission

We catalyze sustainable improvements that rest on policies and practices informed by research evidence for the Americas.

Objectives

  • To work with Member States to strengthen their national health research systems, a critical component of their health systems and their public health systems.
  • To coordinate the research governance within PAHO in support of technical cooperation.

This program contributes to PAHO's goal of attaining equitable health and development for people in the Americas by working with Member States to strengthen their national health research systems, and by coordinating the research governance within PAHO in support of technical cooperation.

 Focal points in countries:

As a decentralized organization we encourage submission of technical requests from Member States and inquiries to the focal point in the countries.

 Main lines of action:

Main lines of action: The Research and Development Program has two main lines of action. One is to strengthen national health research systems and another is to coordinate research governance within PAHO.

STRENGTHENING NATIONAL HEALTH RESEARCH SYSTEMS

  • EVIPNet Américas bridges knowledge for health between the producers and users of scientific knowledge.  [More…]

  • Featured Partnerships. Countless partners—from the Rockefeller Foundation in the 1920s to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and the Global Forum in the 21st century—have joined PAHO in its Regional health work. [More…]
  • Clinical Trial Registration is one of the most critical sources of scientific evidence on the safety and effectiveness of health interventions. It is also a means to ensure transparency and increase public trust in the conduct of clinical research. The registration of all interventional trials is considered to be a scientific, ethical and moral responsibility.  [More…]
  • Scientific dissemination for strengthening national health research systems: Since its inception, PAHO has understood that information is a most valuable tool to attain its goals. It is in this spirit that we offer this collection of resources produced and disseminated by PAHO to advance readers’ knowledge of research for health issues.  [More…]

COORDINATING PAHO’s RESEARCH GOVERNANCE

  • PAHO’s Research for Health Policy: PAHO’s 144th Executive Committee has agreed to submit, for review and approval by the 49th Directing Council (September 2009), PAHO’s Policy on Research for Health. [More… ]
  • PAHO Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR): Established in 1962, the ACHR guides the PAHO Director in health research policy and programs and contributes significantly towards the formulation of research for health policies and strategies within PAHO and towards strategic planning for technical cooperation in research for health. [More… ]
  • Guidelines for the Development of Guidelines. PAHO and WHO issue guidelines intended to improve health care and health outcomes with attention to equity and optimal resource utilization. In developing guidelines it is essential that recommendations and actions are well informed by the best available research evidence. Increasingly, governments, professional and consumer organizations are demanding a more rigorous process to ensure that this is attained. [More… ]
