|Health Economics Units and Departments|
The Area of Health Systems based on Primary Health Care (HSS) supports the activities of the Health Economics Units and Departments (HEU/HED) of the ministries of health and public health institutions of countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
There are currently eleven countries with fully established HEU/HED: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Please click here for the directory.
HSS promotes the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and regional experiences among the HEU/HED of the Region, by inviting representatives from each unit to participate in annual meetings. Prior meetings have been held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 30th, 2006 and April 15-16th, 2009, and latest in Washington, D.C., October, 4-5, 2011.
he main objective of these annual meetings is to promote the exchange of information within the units and departments in regard to institutional aspects and current/future lines of work. By developing a joint agenda at the regional level, fostering an institutional dialogue at bilateral and multilateral levels, and defining the criteria for the operation of a regional network.
HSS in collaboration with representatives from the HEU/HED has elaborated on a list of common themes of work to develop. Some of these future studies pertain to the economic and financing issues of health care systems; the harmonization of public health expenditure statistics and health accounts; studies on social determinants of health; and issues of current interest such as the global financial crisis and the impact on health systems.
