During the celebration of the 63rd World Health Assembly the delegation of the Regional Office for the Americas (AMRO) fulfills an intensive agenda of work which address some of the main health issues and public health policies currently in focus for the institution as the health agency for the Americas.

The World Health Organization convenes their 63rd World Health Assembly to review among others relevant public health issues the implementation of the International Health Regulations adopted in 2005, Pandemic Influenza preparedness, the sharing of viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits; a global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol; the 30th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox; the Polio eradication strategy and the monitoring of the achievement of the health-related Millennium Development Goals.

WHO - Latest News:
- WHO marks 30th anniversary of smallpox eradication
17 May 2010 - Today, WHO celebrates 30 years since smallpox was eradicated. To mark this achievement a statue is being unveiled at WHO Headquarters in Geneva as a permanent reminder of the significance of this feat. The statue is also a symbol of what the world can achieve when countries unite behind a common humanitarian cause.
