Below you will find a collection of regional and international databases that include sodium (salt) content of food products to assist our member states in engaging with the respective food industries and facilitating, where possible, food product comparisons.
How to use these databases?
Databases and databanks are reference tools designed to provide information on the levels of sodium (salt) and other nutrients in processed foods.
The information collected has been used by government and consumers to monitor the salt reduction progress of processed foods, and where not available, to inform discussions with the food industry over the contents of sodium (salt) in products.
Processed Food Databank: is a databank from the Food Standards Agency, UK, on levels of fat, sugar and other nutrients found in processed food in the UK. The databank includes only information gathered from labels of samples purchased in the UK on two sampling rounds, 2004-2005 and 2007. These can be found at the Foods Standards Agency website here.
McCance and Widdowson's The Composition of Foods integrated dataset (CoF IDS): is a dataset which has information on nutrient content of foods commonly consumed in the UK. The data set(2002) is the electronic, reorganized version of the Composition of Foods(CoF) books series published before. Therefore, since the information collected is prior to recent reformulation work by industry, it's use can serve to compare to recent data that reflects the work of industry up-to-date, evaluate their progress, and suggest recommendations. National Diet and Nutrition Survey (Feb 2010): is a dataset which surveys the sodium/salt and saturated fats content in processed foods in the UK as means to monitor the diet and nutrition objectives of the UK health departments. Consensus Action on Salt & Health (CASH)'s sodium/salt content on soups dataset: is a dataset which has information of soup products consumed through either the supermarket or at a retailer in the UK from the period of Dec 2009-Feb 2010. Data on 260 foods products from KFC, McDonalds, Kellogg's, Nestle, Burger King and Subway worldwide of World Action on Salt & Health (WASH): is a dataset with information of menu items from popular food manufacturers world-wide. The dataset includes only information gathered on 2009 from labels on the products or from the manufacturer's website. Data set in excel | press release.
Salt levels in Australian pizza: the data was a product of the survey of popular brands of pizza products consumed through either the supermarket or at a retailer.
