International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
WHAT: A series of events to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Dec. 4), including a panel discussion, the launch of the book Unhappy Hours: Alcohol and Partner Agression in the Americas, and recognition of the singer José José.

WHO: PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses will open the session. Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), will be keynote speaker. Singer José José will offer a personal testimony and be honored as a PAHO Champion of Health by Dr. Roses.
Panel 1: Alcohol and Domestic Violence, to launch the book Unhappy Hours: Alcohol and Partner Agression in the Americas. Moderated by Dr. Maristela Monteiro, PAHO Senior Advisor on Tobacco, Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Panelists: Kathryn Graham, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center), Canada; Lori Heise, Research Fellow at the Gender Violence and Health Centre, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, USA; Mary Ellsberg, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW).
