The Civil Association of Exchanges of Argentina, with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as well as the Open Society Institute (OSI), are receiving nominations to a contest looking for journalists that work in Latin American and the Caribbean that write about issues related with drugs.
The contest was announced as part of the III Latin American Conference about Drug Policy that will take place the 13 and 14 of September 2011 on the Federal District of México; where they will also have a seminary for journalists about drug coverage. The objective is to promote ethics, quality and respect of human rights in the subject.
Journalists who want to participate, should submit work published between June 1st of 2010 and July 30, 2011. Some of the subjects that could have been covered include: drugs and health, alcohol consumption, treatment experiences, geopolitics of drugs, organized crimes, cartels, drugs and culture, substance abuse in everyday life, among others.
The articles could be any journalistic genre (chronicle, article, interview, profile, etc) that covers any of the themes about drugs presented in any form of publication (web, print, broadcast). The last day to get subscribe and submit work electronically is August 7, 2011. The articles had to be published in Spanish or Portuguese.
The first prize winner will get $1000 and a fellowship that will cover expenses (plane tickets, hotel, food and registration) to the Seminary for Journalists and the III Latin American Conference on Drug Policy. The second prize will get the fellowship to assist the conference only and the third prize will get a diploma and honorary mention. The results will be announced on August 22, 2011.
Before the conference starts, 20 journalists from the region will get to participate on the Seminary for Journalists, which will serve as training about coverage related to “Drug Policies in Latin America” on September 12, 2011.
