On July 10, 2012, the Global Business Forum invited Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director, PAHO/WHO, to a luncheon at the Georgetown Club in her honor where she shared her views on the new Pan American Forum for Action on Non-Communicable Diseases (PAF NCD) and the other priorities of PAHO.

On July 10, 2012, the Global Business Forum invited Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director, PAHO/WHO, to a luncheon at the Georgetown Club in her honor where she shared her views on the new Pan American Forum for Action on Non-Communicable Diseases (PAF NCD) and the other priorities of PAHO. The luncheon was attended by representatives from Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Merck, Sanofi, and Unilever. She was accompanied by Irene Klinger, Senior Advisor, Partnerships and Multi-Sector Collaboration; James Hill, Advisor, External Relations, Resource Mobilization, and Partnerships, as well as Eleanor Brtva, the new Vice President for Development at the Pan American Health and Education Foundation ( PAHEF). Dr. Roses took advantage of the occasion to thank Unilever which has been one of three companies that have made significant financial contributions to the PAF NCD.

PAHO and WHO urge countries to reduce sugar consumption among adults and children

 New guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that adults and children reduce their daily intake of "free sugars" to less than 10% of total calories. A further reduction to below 5%—or roughly 6 teaspoons per day in a typical 2,000-calorie diet—would provide additional health benefits, the guidelines say.
