Men and women of Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico, clean the rivers to eliminate breeding sites for mosquitoes that could transmit diseases, such as malaria. Successful experiences have demonstrated the effectiveness of vector control strategies that promote community participation and collaboration between government agencies, NGOs and civil groups.

Through demonstration and evaluation, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) advices to prevent the reintroduction of DDT for malaria control. DDT is an insecticide that was used extensively in the 60s and 70s throughout Mesoamerica. The DDT method especially affected rural populations, women and children who lived near breading grounds, and vector control workers who were exposed. PAHO seeks to promote alternative methods to DDT that are cost effective, replicable and sustainable.
