Del 3 al 7 de diciembre 2009, Guatemala realizo su VIII Asamblea Nacional y IV Taller de Facilitadores de Ecoclubes en las instalaciones de la Dirección General de Educación Física (DIGEF) albergando más de 160 jóvenes de 10 departamentos del país y 8 países de la región.

En esta oportunidad se llevo acabo la Primer Feria Internacional de Ecoclubes en la que participaron jóvenes de Guatemala, El Salvador,CostaRica, Nicaragua, Panamá, México, República Dominicana y Haití. La inauguración fue realizada por Ricardo Gomez (Director de Plan Internacional), el Dr. Pier Paolo Baladelli Representante de la OPS/OMS Guatemala. Fueron premiados los 10 mejores proyectos del año desarrollados por grupos de Ecoclubes, incluidos en la publicación "Ecoclubes: Jóvenes Transformando Comunidades".

La feria contó con visitantes externos de diversas organizaciones, presencia y difusión de varios medios de comunicación, el reconocimiento al fortalecimiento de la Red Internacional y Ecoclubes Guatemala entregado a la Ing. Rosario Castro OPS/OMS y el agradecimiento al apoyo de Ecoclubes Guatemala a Ricardo Gómez Plan Internacional.

En el Contexto de la 1era Asamblea Internacional de Ecoclubes Región Centroamérica, México y Caribe, se llevó acabo el "Taller Internacional para la elaboración y manejo de títeres enfocado en el lavado de manos y la prevención de la influenza" reuniendo a mas de 30 representantes de los diferentes países, con el fin de realizar replicas del mismo a su regreso. El taller rindió muy buenos frutos logrando el interés de los representantes.

El análisis de la situación de los países de la región se llevó acabo entre el sábado 5 y domingo 6, concluyendo con la revisión de las memorias de la Reunión Internacional de Promotores llevada acabo en Nicaragua en el año 2007; Reunión Internacional Yaxlum Honduras 2008; y 1era Asamblea Internacional Región Sur 2010; revisión de los estatutos de la Red Internacional de Ecoclubes; Definición de herramientas y criterios para la incorporación de grupos en el contexto nacional; Definición de los programas internacionales; y la elección de las autoridades regionales.

Entre los acuerdos mas relevantes se encuentra:

  • La incorporación de la sistematización de las experiencias por los Ecoclubes del país como un requerimiento nacional para calificar como grupo activo.
  • El cumplimiento de la entrega del relevamiento nacional a la coordinación regional, entre el 1ero y 30 de Septiembre de cada año.
  • La revisión del Diagnóstico participativo expuesto en la publicación "Guía Práctica de Ecoclubes Guatemala" para ser adaptado y realizado por los ecoclubes de cada uno de los países participantes como una herramienta para la definición de línea de base en el contexto local, nacional y regional, con el fin de proveer de información comparable y evaluable.
  • Definición del Programas Regionales de: Lavado de Manos y Convivencia Transfronteriza
  • Elección de Autoridades Regionales: Diana Girón Presidenta Internacional, Guillermo Hegel Promotor Internacional, Jimmy Garita Coordinador TICs.

PAHO year in review: 2014 public health highlights in the Americas (12/24/2014)

years end-150The year 2014 was marked by progress as well as significant challenges for public health in the Americas. The region's countries advanced toward goals including universal health coverage, expanded access to vaccination, and ensuring that fewer babies are born with HIV. They also confronted major new challenges, including the arrival and spread of the chikungunya virus and the need to prepare for the possible imported cases of Ebola.

Professionals from 11 countries of the Americas are in Quito, Ecuador, this week for a training workshop on risk communication organized by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). The two-day workshop (December 9 and 10) is part of efforts to ensure that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are prepared to respond effectively to potential imported cases of Ebola and other public health emergencies.

The Director of the Department of Communicable Diseases and Health Analysis of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), Dr. Marcos Espinal, said that preventing local transmission of Ebola is the main goal in preparing for the eventual arrival of cases of the disease in Latin America and the Caribbean.
