Control del vector y atención inmediata son claves para detener la epidemia

Managua, Nicaragua, (OPS/OMS) - Ante la emergencia por dengue que sufre el país, el Representante de la OPS/OMS en Nicaragua, Dr. Jorge Luis Prosperi, hizo un llamado a todos los sectores del país a sumarse con entusiasmo a las acciones que realiza el Gobierno, para controlar el vector del dengue que ha ocasionado 8 fallecidos y ha afectado a más de 1562 personas, en lo que va del año, la mayoría de ellos niños menores de 10 años.

Durante la conferencia de prensa, convocada hoy por el Ministro de Salud Dr. Guillermo González junto a las máximas autoridades del Ministerio de Salud, el Representante de la OPS/OMS en Nicaragua valoró de positivas las acciones que realiza este Ministerio, tanto para el control de vector como en lo que se refiere a la atención de pacientes en la red de servicios médicos. Agregó que la OPS/OMS ha movilizado 2.5 millones de córdobas, que ha puesto a disposición del Ministerio, así como asistencia técnica para apoyar al país en acciones concretas para controlar la epidemia.

El Ministro de Salud, Dr. Guillermo González,  tildó de "delicada" la situación, por el brote de dengue, debido a que este año están circulando varios serotipos de dengue, incluyendo el serotipo 3 que estuvo ausente por varios años, lo que ocasiona una mayor vulnerabilidad en la población, principalmente en niños que no estuvieron en contacto con este serotipo. Hay un riesgo mayor debido a la presencia de otros virus respiratorios, entre ellos el virus A H1N1, que han ocasionado, en algunos casos, que éstos se combinen con el dengue presentando una mayor peligrosidad para la población. Los funcionarios alertaron a la población sobre la alta agresividad de este brote de dengue, que puede llegar a complicarse rápidamente, por lo que enfatizaron en la importancia de no automedicarse y acudir a las Unidades de Atención tempranamente.

El Director de Vigilancia de la Salud, Dr. Edmundo Sánchez, informó que es una prioridad la eliminación del vector adulto y de los criaderos, por lo que se vienen ejecutando los planes de cobertura para la abatización y la fumigación de las viviendas con la participación activa de varias instituciones como el Ejército Nacional, la Policía, y la comunidad organizada, que se han movilizado con rapidez para cumplir estas actividades.

PAHO year in review: 2014 public health highlights in the Americas (12/24/2014)

years end-150The year 2014 was marked by progress as well as significant challenges for public health in the Americas. The region's countries advanced toward goals including universal health coverage, expanded access to vaccination, and ensuring that fewer babies are born with HIV. They also confronted major new challenges, including the arrival and spread of the chikungunya virus and the need to prepare for the possible imported cases of Ebola.

Professionals from 11 countries of the Americas are in Quito, Ecuador, this week for a training workshop on risk communication organized by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). The two-day workshop (December 9 and 10) is part of efforts to ensure that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are prepared to respond effectively to potential imported cases of Ebola and other public health emergencies.
