The goal this year will be to highlight work or activities relating to bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for nominations to the World No Tobacco Day Awards of individuals or organizations for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. The deadline for the receipt of nominations is March 10.

Nominees can be individuals or nongovernmental organizations devoted to tobacco control. They must have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the policies and measures contained in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its guidelines, particularly in relation to the theme of World No Tobacco Day, which this year is “ban tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.”

There will be a maximum of six awards per WHO region. Two of the awardees might be granted special recognition by means of a WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award.

The nomination can be for a particular action, or for a group of actions, or for the body of a nominee’s work at the local, national, or international level. The nominee may also have demonstrated outstanding leadership in his or her approach to tobacco control. WHO and Other United Nations staff, people or collectives associated with the tobacco industry, and those who have received a World No Tobacco Day award in the previous two years are not eligible.

Those interested in submitting a nomination, can submit the attached form to the corresponding Regional Office. For the Region of the Americas, send nominations to Cette adresse email est protégée contre les robots des spammeurs, vous devez activer Javascript pour la voir. .

In 2012, this award recognized efforts to promote tobacco control and counter tobacco industry actions, as does the World No Tobacco Day campaign this year. WHO will honor Dr. José Agenor Álvares da Silva, Director of Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA), while PAHO will recognize Senator Ernesto Saro Boardman, President of the Health Commission of the Mexican Senate, and the organization Corporate Accountability International.
