The beautiful smiles of women in the Americas and around the world remind us on this International Women's Daythat we must keep our promise. The promise to continue to work for their health and well-being, and to finally to a stop to violence against women. More than half of the women in some countries in the region have suffered from violence.

The health sector—in collaboration with other sectors, including the judicial sector—plays a key role in identifying women at risk of violence, providing emergency medical attention, and helping women and girls get access to protection and support services.
