About the PCPCD Dengue Regional Strategy

The failure of dengue prevention and control strategies and the already high and still increasing incidence of the disease, including that of dengue hemorrhagic fever, led CIDA to approve the inclusion of a dengue component to the PCPCD in November 2003. Funding for advocacy activities to promote the adoption of the Integrated Management of Dengue Strategy (IMS-Dengue) was provided by CIDA and approved by the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization in 2003 through Resolution CD44.R9.

In addition to its actions in advocacy, the PCPCD has supported the establishment of a working group (GT-dengue, for its acronym in Spanish) in each beneficiary country, comprised of international experts who work with national personnel to jointly develop a national integrated dengue management strategy. All Project countries, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru, have adopted the strategy and have a national plan to support it. In addition, the PCPCD supported the development of the IMS-dengue plan for the Andean Subregion.

Given that the results and targets were achieved in the Project’s fifth year, the PCPCD is supporting the implementation of the social communication, entomological surveillance and clinical attention components of the Integrated Management Strategy as part of the implementation of the national plans in Paraguay and Peru. In addition, the Project works to promote the sharing of experiences and lessons learned in the prevention and control of dengue in the Region.
