Vaccination Week in the Americas 2010

Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) is an unparalleled effort led by the countries and territories of the Region to strengthen the Expanded Program on Immunization by reaching populations with otherwise limited access to regular health services and at heightened risk of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases. Since its inception in 2003, more than 288 million individuals across the age spectrum have been vaccinated as a result of the initiative. Multiple social communication campaigns have also been conducted under the framework of VWA, promoting vaccination to the public as an important preventative health measure. For more information on the history and background of VWA, see About VWA.

The eighth annual VWA took place between 24 April and 1 May under the theme of “reaching everyone”.  VWA launching events occurred throughout the Region, including in Nicaragua, on the border between Suriname and French Guiana, and in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Resources for the national VWA planning process can be found at Country Planning Materials, while promotional materials, such as VWA videos and posters, can be found under Media Gallery and Graphic Materials. Additional Technical Information about the initiative is also available.  In 2010, VWA coincided with the 5th European Immunization Week (EIW), the first ever Vaccination Week in the Eastern Mediterranean (VWEM), the National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) in the United States, and the National Immunization Awareness Week in Canada (NIAW).
