Health Services Organization and Management

To improve the performance of health systems, it is essential to strengthen the organization and management capacity of institutions and health services networks. This section will provide information on health services organization and management; as well as on tools and methodologies employed as part of the technical cooperation provided to countries within the framework of the initiative on strengthening health systems based on Primary Health Care (PHC).

La potencialidad del MGPSS para aumentar la eficiencia en el marco del acceso universal a la salud y la cobertura universal de salud

Washington, D.C. Noviembre del 2014. Aproximadamente 24 expertos y profesionales de la salud fueron convocados por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud / Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS) para participar en el Taller de Análisis de la  Metodología de Gestión Productiva de los Servicios de Salud  (MGPSS) en Panamá del 12 al 14 de noviembre. Los  participantes procedieron de instituciones de salud de Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador y Panamá, así como de la OPS/OMS.


International Healthcare Competencies Meeting

This group convened at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Headquarters in Washington, DC January 15-17, 2014. The purpose of this meeting was to determine the core competencies needed for the professionalism of healthcare management worldwide, establishment of a call for action, the role of the consortium and the resulting documents needed to move forward with this work. There were 22 individuals representing 15 different organizations.


Virtual course will focuses on productive management methodology for health services

Washington, D.C. August 20, 2013. Managers or aspiring to manager in health services can postulated in order to participate in the virtual course of training in methodology of productive management of the health services, organized by the Pan American Health Organization, through the Virtual Campus of Public Health.  September 12, 2013 is the deadline to submit applications on line for the course.

The course will take place from 30 September to 6 December 2013 and whose space is limited, will be in virtual forum and with a duration of ten weeks and will be dictated in Spanish.   

It will have individual and group activities with orientation and tutorial attendance.   Its content is divided into four modules a) Strengthening of the managerial capacity, b) management indicators, information analysis, and c) decision-making.

As a contribution to the task of building and strengthening managerial capacity in health systems and services, improving the use of information and evidence for decision-making and action, PAHO provides the Productive Management Methodology for Health Services (PMMHS) and its support tools as an option for health services managers. The PMMHS is presented as an alternative that provides information for analyzing the relevance, efficiency and quality of healthcare provision, negotiation of management agreements (contracts) and costing and financing of health care services. [Please click here for the document]



International Healthcare Competencies Meeting

Experts from recognized public health organizations will discuss healthcare competencies to propose a set of global healthcare competencies model that will help to health executives to use it in assessing expertise in critical areas of healthcare management. The competencies are categorized into five domains, and the main topics for the domains are as follows: The critical healthcare management competencies, Communication and Relationship Management, Leadership, Professionalism, Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment, and Business Skills and Knowledge.
