PAHO launches self-learning course on risk communication strategies

The Pan American Health Organization launched a new online self-study course titled, "Risk Communication: Building capacity under the International Health Regulations (IHR)". Available through the Virtual Campus for Public Health, the new course aims to strengthen capacity in developing risk communication strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dengue Dengue and severe dengue pose a public health problem in the tropical and subtropical areas of the Region of the Americas. During 2011, Member States reported 979,774 cases of dengue, of which 15,860 presented serious forms requiring hospitalization and 692 deaths.

Lessons from the pandemic: the need for new tools for risk and outbreak communication

This article surveys the current guidelines and makes recommendations for additional tools and guidelines to be developed in four areas: integrating long-term behavior change models with outbreak communications; research to develop a better understanding of communicating through the internet; research to understand how to use communications to build trust; and developing guidelines and principles to understand the political nature of disease outbreaks...

First Participants Graduate from the Virtual Risk Communication Certified Course

Washington, September 15, 2011.

Seven months after the start of the first Virtual Risk Communication Certified Course, 17 students from 11 countries in the Americas received certificates for successfully completing the six modules that make up the innovative educational initiative, conducted jointly by Universidad del Norte and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

LA Times: Bird flu back on the rise, U.N. warns

Bird flu was in decline -- but health officials warned Monday that it appears to be on the rise again.

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) "urged heightened readiness and surveillance against a possible major resurgence" of the virus, which has crossed over from birds to infect 565 people and kill 331 of them since its appearance in 2003.
