PAHO/WHO Coordinating Regional Efforts to Assist Haiti after Earthquake

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is coordinating the mobilization of efforts to help health authorities in Haiti meet the basic health needs of their people in the aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake, through its country offices. All the countries in the Region have responded with great solidarity.

PAHO/WHO Mobilizing to Meet Haiti’s Health Needs after Earthquake

The Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is mobilizing health experts to assess the impact of yesterday's earthquake on the health situation in Haiti and working with other United Nations agencies, international partners, and local authorities to mobilize and coordinate relief and recovery efforts focused on the quake's survivors.

One of PAHO's Public Health Heroes Killed in Haiti

Dr. Zilda Arns NewmannDr. Zilda Arns Neumann, a Brazilian pediatrician who was honored by the Pan American Health Organization in 2002 as a Public Health Hero, is one of the victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti. Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann—also winner of PAHO's Award for Administration in 1994—was founder and director of the Pastoral da Criança, the organ for social action of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil. Health Facilities Affected by Haiti Earthquake

destruction in Haiti after earthquakePreliminary reports coming from Haiti indicate that at least two health facilities, the Eliazard Germain hospital in Petionville and the Petit frères et Soeurs facility have colapsed due to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on January 12, 2010. The Pan American Health Organization is mobilizing a rapid health response team through the Dominican Republic, and neighboring countries are already organizing humanitarian aid missions and assistance and search and rescue teams.
