Situation summary in the Americas

In 2016, up to epidemiological week (EW) 47, three countries reported cases of jungle yellow fever: Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. In addition, since the publication of the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Yellow Fever Epidemiological Update of 9 November 2016 up to EW 47 of 2016, Brazil confirmed two epizootics in nonhuman primates (NHP) in the state of Sao Paulo, one in the municipality of Severínia and another in Cajobi.

Situation summary in the Americas

In 2015, three countries in the Americas confirmed circulation of yellow fever virus: Bolivia reported epizootic and Brazil and Peru reported human cases. In 2016, as of epidemiological week (EW) 34, three countries had reported jungle yellow fever: Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Distribution of cases by epidemiological week (EW) is presented in Figure 1.

In light of the circulation of yellow fever in several areas of the Region, and in the context of the ongoing El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) advises Member States to establish and maintain the capacity to detect and confirm cases of yellow fever and keep health professionals up to date to enable them to identify suspected cases and manage cases properly, especially in areas at risk for yellow fever. In addition, Member States are advised to maintain high vaccination coverage in at risk populations.
