Washington, D.C., 2 November, 2012 (PAHO/WHO)—The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has launched an electronic platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, as a tool to promote horizontal cooperation among countries on eHealth.
The PAHO/WHO eHealth Newsletter allows professionals to share information on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for health, based on experiences in the Americas and other parts of the world.
This space highlights some of the advances in eHealth and upcoming events in the field. It also offers recommended readings, interviews with leading experts in the sector, and announcements of online courses and grants.
The newsletter will feature a section that will highlight applications of mobile technologies for improving the lives of citizens and to support health professionals in making decisions based on scientific evidence. The first edition of the PAHO/WHO eHealth Newsletter offers resources and tools such as a National eHealth Strategy Toolkit, a complete and practical set of guidelines for the development of public policies and national strategies on eHealth that can be adapted to the specific circumstances and health objectives of each country.
The electronic mechanism, intended to complement the Regional Laboratory on eHealth, exemplifies the Organization's commitment to its Member States to contribute to the sustainable development of health systems and to improve system access and quality through the use of ICT.
This initiative is framed by strategic objective 3.1 of the Strategy on eHealth for the Americas, namely to “promote intersectoral cooperation, both within each country and among several countries, and identify electronic mechanisms for sharing best practices, regional resources, and lessons learned.”
Regional Laboratory on eHealth
PAHO/WHO, with the support of the Spanish Cooperation, now has its first Regional Laboratory on eHealth, a portal bringing together experiences and advances in eHealth of the countries of the Region. It also offers a collection of recommended readings, tools, and contributions from experts to support the development of National Strategies on eHealth.
