The Norwegian Centre for Integrated Care and Telemedicine (NST) as the WHO Collaborating Centre for Telemedicine and eHealth and as an Ambassador Platform for The European Space Agency (ESA AP) organized an engaging international workshop titled “Healthy Living in the High North”.
The workshop held on November 30, 2012 in Tromsø was organized in collaboration with the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP), a programme group under the Arctic Council. This joint event focused on the challenges in providing health services to populations living, working and visiting the remote regions of the Northern hemisphere.
Presentations covered a variety of examples of the application of Telemedicine in low-cost and/or geographically challenging environments in Canada, North-west Russia and Norway and provided a revealing insight into the social, technological and resource factors influencing service provision to the various population groups living above the artic circle. The solutions presented have relevance to several Member States of the WHO European Region that are looking to telemedicine and eHealth as ways to strengthen health care delivery in similar hardship environments.
