Oral Health for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities
On 7 April 2011, the Ministry of Health conducted a sensitisation workshop, funded by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), at which time participants received training to understand the process of dental caries and best practices to prevent dental caries in persons with intellectual disabilities.
The Ministry of Health will continue to collaborate with stakeholders for the implementation phase especially PAHO, the Special Olympics, the Jamaica Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, Colgate Palmolive and the School of Oral Health Sciences.
PAHO Leaders in International Health Program Edmundo Granda Ugalde 2011
2011 represents the fourth year that the PAHO Leaders in International Health Program Edmundo Granda Ugalde (LIHP) 2011 is being offered in its new decentalized format. To date, 133 participants from 25 countries have benefited from this new modality which is based on a dynamic collaboration with the PAHO/WHO Country Offices and national institutions in the countries of the participants. Two individuals are participarting in LIHP 2011 from Jamaica – Tazhmoye Crawford and Rudolph Stevens. The LIHP, encompassing nine months, begins its activites in March and ends in December 2011.
During the initial phase, participants engage in different activities, discussions and visits related to the principal health and development challenges facing the country and the region as well as the main actors involved in the same, and begin to define a project to be developed later in-country in coordination with PAHO/WHO, government and other authorities. Participants engage in a program of work and learning opportunities reinforced through a series of problem-based virtual modules and a community of practice that reaches beyond the participants themselves. Tazhmoye Crawford and Rudolph Stevens participated in a week long orientation program in Jamaica from 4-8 April 2011 and will be attending a one-week intensive training in international health in Mexico in May 2011

Refractive Errors in School Children
On 27 April 2011, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with PAHO, held a one-day stakeholder workshop to draft guidelines for the standard operating procedures to be followed when screening for refractive errors in children in Jamaica. Juan Carlos Silva, the PAHO Regional Advisor in the Prevention of Blindness, and Philip Hand from Sightsavers International also participated in this workshop.
On 28 April 2011, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with PAHO, held a one-day stakeholder workshop to prepare a situation analysis of low vision services in Jamaica and formulate a set of recommendations with the intent of strengthening the country’s low vision services. Juan Carlos Silva, the PAHO Regional Advisor in the Prevention of Blindness, Nelly Rosario Espinoza, President of the pan-American Society of Low Vision, and Philip Hand, Sightsavers International, also participated in this workshop.
