Kingston, Jamaica, 23 September 2011:  The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has announced the appointment of Ms. Margareta Skold as PAHO/WHO Representative for Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, with effect from 6 October 2011.

 

Ms. Skold, a national of Sweden, obtained a Diploma in General Nursing from the Samariterhemmet School of Nursing (Sweden) in 1973.  In 1977, she received a Diploma in General Development Assistance and Disaster Relief from the Swedish Development Assistance Training Authority, and a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Landstingets Vardhogskola) in 1980.  She obtained a Master’s degree in Health Planning and Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine/London School of Economics, United Kingdom, in 1997.

Ms. Skold began her professional career in Nursing and Midwifery positions in 1975. From 1980 to 1983 she worked as Community Health Advisor in the Igreja Evangelica Luterana do Brasil supported by Church of Swedish Mission, Uppsala, Sweden. From 1987 to 1989 she held the position of Social Assistant and Evaluator at the Swedish Church in Paris, France, and from 1989 to 1996 she served as the Executive Secretary for health at the CMC Churches Action for Health, World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. 

In 1997 Ms. Skold joined the World Health Organization (WHO/HQs) as Technical Officer in the Department of Intensified Cooperation with Countries and Peoples in greatest Need (ICO).  In 2001 she took up the position of  External Relations Officer in the Civil Society Initiative Department.  From 2003 to 2006 she served as Technical Officer in the Department of Country Focus (CCO) during which time, from  November 2005 until July 2006, she was on loan to the WHO Office in Indonesia as the Senior Planning Officer Ad Interim.

Ms. Skold has served as Public Health Administrator at the WHO Country Office in Myanmar since 2006, a position that she held until the date of this new appointment.

Ms. Skold replaces Dr. Ernest Pate who now serves in Barbados as the PAHO/WHO Caribbean Program Coordinator.
