On 14 June 2012, countries worldwide will celebrate World Blood Donor Day with events to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.  World Blood Donor Day was established by the World Health Assembly in 2004 and its scope of events increases every year in recognition of the need to strengthen blood services and to express gratitude to all those selfless individuals who donate their blood for people they will never meet.

Leaders in International Health Program 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Kingston - 11 May 2012 

2012 represents the fifth year that PAHO/WHO’s Edmundo Granda Ugalde Leaders in International Health Program (LIHP)  is being offered in its new decentalized format.  To date, 185 participants from 31 countries have benefited from this new modality which is based on a dynamic collaboration with the PAHO/WHO Country Offices and national institutions in the countries of the participants.  The Program had a record of 65 professionals from 23 countries participating in the LIHP 2011.

Sample ImageOn Tuesday, September 13, 2011, the Jamaica Ministry of Health and Pan American Health Organization will be launching its publication “Transfusion: Basic Guidelines, Principles and Practice”.  The launch of the publication will take place at the Head office of the Ministry on King Street in Down Town, Kingston at 10:00a.m. Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer invites all point of care medical personnel to become familiar with and support full implementation of this publication. It has been developed to provide guidance in the practice of transfusion medicine in accordance with good clinical practice. As such, better outcome in patient care and greater efficiency in blood and component use is anticipated in-keeping with implementation of improved clinical use of blood.

Cayman Islands - May 2012,

The National Health Policy and Strategic Plan of the Cayman Islands is being developed with technical assistance from PAHO/WHO through the “Strengthening the integration of the British and Dutch Overseas Caribbean Territories within the wider Pan Caribbean framework” (ECOCT) project.  At the request of the Ministry of Health, PAHO/WHO facilitated the conduct of a national stakeholders’ meeting from 3-4 May 2012 to develop the national health policy and strategic plan for the Cayman Islands.
