With a population of 46,294,841 million people, Colombia is the 27th largest country in the world by population and has the second largest population of any Spanish-speaking country in the world, after Mexico. It is also the only country in South America that has coasts in the Pacific Ocean and in the Atlantic Ocean. Colombia is a middle power, with the third largest economy in South America.  It has a GDP per capita of $9,800 (adjusted by purchasing power parity).  Colombia is famous for the production of coffee, flowers, emeralds, coal and oil.

Colombia is very ethnically diverse, and the interaction between descendants of the original native inhabitants, Spanish colonists, Africans brought as slaves and twentieth-century immigrants from Europe and the Middle East has produced a rich cultural heritage.  However, Colombia is characterized by one of the highest Gini coefficients in Latin America, 58.5 in 2009.
