Ecuador characterized by great geographical, economic, ethnic and biological diversity, is one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of the Gran Colombia in 1830. He country has a land area of 256,370 square kilometers and is divided geographically into four regions: Coastal, Sierra, Amazon and Insular.  It has a population of 14,464,739 and a GDP per capita of $7,800.  A quarter century of civilian governance was achieved in 2004, this period however, has been marred by political instability, sudden changes in governments, chronic economic crisis and massive migrations. Today Ecuador 's dollar based economy seems to be improving and diversifying, in large part helped by the rise in oil income revenues. Despite of this, difficulties loom in the horizon, as this small state attempts to compete in a globalized world economy. In terms of income distribution Ecuador 's Gini Index stands at 46.9, with data available only for urban households (2010). In the Human Development Index (HDI) of 2011, Ecuador was ranked 83nd and the HDI has been consistently improving from year to year, however, its ranking indicates the need to keep working on the country's social indicators. Ecuador 's GDP per capita (adjusted by purchasing power parity) was only $3,900 in 2005.

The political will demonstrated by the country's leadership in the quest to reduce poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals is worth highlighting. This effort materialized with the creation of one the first National MDG Secretariats in the region, the Secretaría Nacional de los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio. Equally, Ecuador has shown leadership by being one of the first countries to make health MDGs sub-national mappings for the areas with the most vulnerable populations and to publish their results in the region's indigenous languages. Such is the case of Cotacachi with its report named: El Gobierno Local de Cotacachi y Los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio relacionados con la Salud.
