Chile with a population of 17,113,688 and a GDP per capita of $15,400 is one of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations and is recognized as a middle power.  It has a Human Development index of .805 and is ranked 44th in the world.  It also has the highest Global Competitiveness Index of any Latin American nation.  It leads Latin America in human development, competitiveness, income per capita, low perception of corruption and state of peace.  However, is still has high economic inequality, as measure by a high Gini index of 52.33 in 2009.  Chile is a founding member of both the United Nations and the Union of South American Nations and in May 2010, became the first Latin American county to join the OECD.Communities in Chile
