|About Health Promoting Universities|
The concept of Health Promoting Universities "refers to Higher Education Institutions promoting an organizational culture that is based on the values and principles of the global Health Promotion (HP) movement, which translates into an institutional policy for sustaining and continuously enhancing action on HP" (Arroyo, 2009).
Health Promotion action withing the higher education setting includes the following:
• Desarrollo de normativa y políticas institucionales para propiciar ambientes favorables a la Salud;
The bases of the Health Promoting Universities movement are rooted on principles from Health for All (1978), sustainable development, Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (1986), that were translated into practice using a healthy settings approach easily recognized under the initiatives of Healthy Cities/Municipalities/Communities, Health Promoting Schools, and Health Promoting Universities.
The first International Conference on Health Promoting Universities was held in Lancaster, England in 1996, sponsored by the World Health Organization. The Health Promoting Universities approach "aspires to create a learning environment and organizational culture that enhances health, well-being and sustainability of the community, and enables people to achieve their full potential."
La Red Ibero-Americana de Universidades Promotoras de Salud (RIUPS) fue oficialmente constituida el 6 de octubre del 2007, en Ciudad Juárez, México Desde su origen, la secretaría técnica de la RIUPS para los países de las Américas se encuentra ubicada en el Centro Colaborador de la OPS/OMS de la Universidad de Puerto Rico.
