Together on our way to a Healthier Suriname

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, Regional office of the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Suriname, organized a national conference entitled: "'Together towards a Healthier Suriname: Intersectoral approach to the risk factors of Non-Communicable Diseases" on the 17th of August 2011. During the conference, representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, civil society, professional associations, UN organizations and other key partners discussed how to unite all of society to stop the non-communicable disease epidemic in Suriname.

The United Nations General Assembly will hold a High-Level Meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on 19-20 September 2011 in New York. This meeting is a unique opportunity for the global community to unite to take action against the epidemic of NCDs.

The decision to hold this meeting was made because of the global health, socio-economic, and development impacts of the four main types of NCDs, namely cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. The Caribbean Group of States (CARICOM) called for the high-level meeting In Suriname in 2009, these four types of NCDs were in the top 8 leading causes of death and accounted for nearly half of all deaths. These diseases also share common risk factors including tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity, and poor diet.

On March 14th 2011, The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with PAHO Suriname, conducted a first session with selected stakeholders in Suriname to prepare for the UN NCD High-level Meeting in September 2011.

The agenda included an introduction on the UN NCD High-level Meeting; a roundtable; and discussion on focus areas of physical activity, sport and health, nutrition, responsible food production, implementation of Codex Alimentarius, and food labeling. Dr. L. Resida, Director of the Bureau of Public Health, chaired the meeting.

MEXICO, February 24-25 2001

Ministers of Health and their representatives, including the Minister of Health of Suriname and a representative from the Bureau of Public Health, met in Mexico City on February 24-25, 2011 to review and share their experiences in combating NCDs and to prepare a statement from the Americas for the UN’s High-level Meeting on NCDs in September 2011.
