Trinidad and Tobago, 6-8 September, 2011. A three day workshop on Gender and Diabetes was held 6-8 September, 2011 at Kapok Hotel, Port of Spain.



A three day workshop on Gender and Diabetes was held 6-8 September, 2011 at Kapok Hotel, Port of Spain.  There were 33 participants from Arima Healthy Life style clinic and Sangre Grande health facilities and the Ministries of Health, Gender, Youth and Child Development. The workshop was organized by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Country office in collaboration with the Gender, Ethnicity and Human Rights unit in the HQ, Ministry of Health, Mexico and the US Mexico Border Field Office. The Technical Cooperation among Countries between Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago will be highlighted at the UN High Level Meeting on NCD side panel on September 20, 2011.


Objectives of the workshop


  • The workshop will build a common conceptual base about gender approaches, key concepts, the dynamic relationship between them, and their application in the diagnosis, treatment and care of diabetes and other chronic disease in the framework equity and ethnic diversity.
  • To analyze the differences and disparities in the roles that men and women play.  The power imbalances in their relations, their needs, barriers and opportunities, and the impact of these differences on their lives and their health; and based on these findings, to design practical strategies for addressing diabetes and other NCD care.
  • To design an intervention proposal to integrate gender approaches in the management of diabetes and other NCDs with a strong component of monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
  • To create self-awareness among health care workers regarding any personal biases in their approach to health care delivery associated with gender
