The Pan American Health Organization is the Regional Office of the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization is headquartered in Geneva Switzerland and was established in 1948. The Pan American Health Organization, an international public health agency, founded in 1902 and working towards improving the health of the peoples of the Americas. PAHO is headquartered in Washington, D.C. PAHO has a history of being the longest established public health agency internationally. 

What does PAHO do?

The Organization provides technical cooperation in a range of specialized health fields. The Organization’s essential mission is to strengthen national and local health systems and improving the health of the peoples of the Americas, in collaboration with Ministries of Health, other Government agencies and international agencies, non governmental organizations, and civil society. PAHO has twenty-five country offices and five specialized centers based in Latin America and the Caribbean. PAHO member states include all thirty five countries in the Americas.

PAHO/WHO in Trinidad and Tobago

  • Trinidad and Tobago became a Member State of the World Health Organization (WHO) on 3 January 1963 and of PAHO in September 1963.
  • In 1964, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago signed a Basic Agreement with the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, formalizing the conditions of PAHO/WHO projects of assistance to the Government. 
  • This Agreement constitutes the legal framework for PAHO/WHO’s presence and Technical Cooperation Program in Trinidad and Tobago.

Technical Cooperation and Areas of Work

In Trinidad and Tobago, the Technical cooperation (TC) program is developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and is based on an assessment of the health situation and reflects the health priorities of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago

The selected Strategic Priorities are:

§         Strengthening the health system and services

§         Improving the health status of the population

§         Reducing threats to health

The current Country Cooperation strategy covers the period 2010-2013.
