|Evidence Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet)|
Trinidad and Tobago officially launched the EVIDENCE INFORMED POLICY NETWORK (EVIPNet) on Monday 5 October 2009, following the introductory workshop “Using research evidence”. The event took place at 8:00 am the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), Graduation Pavilion, O’Meara Campus, Arima.
The Evidence Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet) is an innovative attempt to strengthen the links between research and policy in low- and middle-income countries. The network is based on a new mechanism devised to support the health policy-decision making process.
The network was started in Asia back in 2005 to promote the systematic use of high quality health research in policymaking in low and middle income countries. In 2006 EVIPnet extended to Africa and in 2007, led by the Pan American Health Organization, EVIPNet Americas was started. Trinidad was among the 10 countries to initiate the Regional network and it is now the second country in the Americas, and the first in the Caribbean to officially launch its national network.
Other participants in the event are the PAHO/WHO country Representative, Dr. Carol Boyd-Scobie; the President of the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Prof. Ken Julian; John Lavis, Director of Knowledge Translation at McMaster University in Canada and Chair of the PAHO Advisory committee on Health Research; Dr. Luis Gabriel Cuervo, PAHO Regional Advisor for Research Promotion and Development; Mr. Earl Henry, TRT EVIPNet focal point; and Dr. Edwin Vicente Cinco Bolastig, Centre for Health Sciences, University of Trinidad and Tobago.
The launch precedes an all-day workshop on Using Research Evidence. Offered in the same venue (UTT) the workshop is being conducted by Dr. John Lavis and has been coordinated by Mr. Earl Henry. Knowledge translation and the use of Evidence are key components in the recently approved PAHO Policy on Research for health (http://www.paho.org/researchportal/policy).
The workshop is an introductory course for health policy decision makers and is being offered to the EVIPNet national team as well as other participants from national institutions working or involved in research. Other courses along the same lines will be offered in the future for the team.
