The American Public Health Association (APHA) was honored by PAHO last night for its 140 years of public health advocacy in the United States, during the 2012 Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health, held at the Organization of American States (OAS) Hall of the Americas.

PAHO Deputy Director Jon K. Andrus noted that “The APHA is the primary voice for public health advocacy in the United States and leads the way to protect all Americans, their families and their communities from preventable, serious health threats.”

Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, Executive Director of APHA, accepted the special recognition.

The APHA is the oldest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world and has been working to improve public health in the United States since 1872.
