Caracas, 02 de junio de 2012. The Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) had the privilege to actively support Sint Maarten Ministry of Health (MoH) on the Open Hose Health Day (Memo Short summary of Open House event) that took place last Saturday the 19th May 2012 in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten. This activity was organized within the Vaccination Week of the Americas, which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary with millions of children vaccinated all over the region.
PAHO/WHO was represented in this activity by Dr. Cristian Morales who, on behalf of Dr. Jorge Jenkins (PAHO/WHO Chief of Mission for Venezuela, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Insular Territories of the Kingdom of the Netherlands), shortly addressed the audience during the inauguration, and joint Mr. Cornelius de Weever, Minister of Health, in offering a certificate of recognition to the NGOs and MoH staff who participated in the event consecrating their time and energy to make a big success of this event.
Not only there were nearly 200 children checked and 75 vaccinated but the community had the opportunity to beneficiate from a wide range of health information and promotion initiatives covering nutrition, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.
A workout session, at the rhythm of Zumba, put the participants on the move giving the opportunity to close the activity signifying the importance of exercise as the good intervention to fight against obesity and to nurture healthy behaviour on the youngest and the community as a whole.
