For several years, PAHO/WHO has established a strategy to strengthen the capacity of the health sector on emergency response that includes the conformation of a regional team formed by different specialists in health issues who are mobilized to the affected country in order to support the national health institutions.

With financial support from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation -AECID- (see their web page in Spanish), the PAHO/WHO Emergency and Disaster Program has set in Central America, Dominican Republic and Ecuador an initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of the health sector institutions in each country.

It was considered necessary to provide training to the National Teams for Disasters Response and they received the necessary equipment and management tools in order to facilitate the decision-making process. Likewise, technical guides are available and a platform for information management and decision making through the Emergency Operations Centers (EOC).
