As part of the strategy "Hospitals Safe from Disasters" the process of development and validation of Hospital Plans to respond to emergencies was initiated in eight health facilities of El Salvador. The Ministry of Health carries out this initiative, with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Salvadoran Red Cross and Swiss Labour Action and the financial support from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).
Having a Emergency Response Plan allows health facilities to increase its operational capacity for rapid response as they systematize at internal level and also with local institutions the coordination mechanisms, which directly affects the security level of the health facilities.
The process that has begun in El Salvador is not limited to the preparation of plans, but includes staff training; this staff will become facilitators of the issue and they will work on future dissemination of the importance of this topic in other areas of the country.
The health facilities participating in this initiative are from:
- Paracentral Region (San Vicente - Hospitales de Santa Gertrudis; La Paz - Hospital Santa Teresa; Cuscatlán - Hospital Nuestra Señora de Fátima y Cabañas - Hospital Sensuntepeque e Ilobasco),
- Central Region ( La Libertad - Hospital San Rafael)
- Oriental Region (Usulután - Hospital San Pedro de Usulután) and
