After two years of technical preparation, four information centres are now functioning with their respective virtual libraries in Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, located in the national organizations responsible for risk management. Each centre has a series of information services available on its web page: data bases, full text documents, contact lists and news which follow up activities on risk management or emergencies and disasters. The BiVa-PaD Centres select, process and disseminate information, deal with users’ requests and promote work through a network of institutions which produce and use information.

The network is designed as a collaborative initiative, a national and sub-regional space which facilitates interaction of actors committed to the reduction and mitigation of disasters, with a view to generating synergies, alliances and joint work dynamics which facilitate the information flow required at the different stages in the process of risk management.

The centres use the same methodology and the same tools for processing and organizing information with the objective of working in a Network and easily sharing information available. This means that, for example, users in Bolivia have easy access to information which exists on any of the other web pages, using the same search system and the same classification of information.

The BiVaPad network is the result of a joint effort on the part of several institutions: the General Secretariat of the Andean Community, the Pan American Health Organization, the Regional Disaster Information Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and partner organizations of CAPRADE (Andean Committee for Disaster Prevention and Relief) in each one of the selected countries.

The work is part of a wider effort carried out by the Project to support Disaster Prevention in the Andean Community (PREDECAN). For more information, visit the four centres at the following addresses:
