Each "Ask the expert" webinar in the Mental Health Innovation Network (MHIN) series focuses on country level implementation of one of mhinlogoWHO's mental health action plan 2013-2020 objectives. The aim of this series is to learn more about the approaches used by policy makers to implement mental health programs and how policy makers are aiming to achieve the action plan targets.

The focus of the 4th session, which took place on June 30th, was objective 4 of the Plan: Strengthening information systems, nuevowebinar1evidence, and research for mental health. Dévora Kestel, Chief of PAHO/WHO Mental Health and Substance Use Unit chaired the session and shared the challenges of this issue for the Region of the Americas.

The other speaker was Cinthia Lociks de Araújo, from the Mental Health Department of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Her presentation discussed the main sources of mental health data in Brazil, both information systems and more recent evaluative research. Data collection processes and monitoring indicators were contextualized in relation to the Brazilian health system and mental health care model characteristics. She also pointed out the main challenges and approaches to improve the monitoring and evaluation processes in the country in order to promote an evidence-based mental health policy.
