Epidemiological Analysis of Tabulated Data
Multilingual Version 2.1 for Windows
June 1998

Software developed by the Servicio de Información sobre Saúde Pública de la Consellería de Sanidade e Servicios Sociais de la Xunta de Galicia (Spain) and the  Health Situation Analysis Program (SHA) of the Pan American Health Organization.

Epidat 2.1 is a computer software that targets epidemiologists and other health professionals who deal with tabulated data. Epidat was developed to complement other statistical packages that use databases and to offer a tool that facilitates and supports the teaching of epidemiology. This new multilingual version allows users to select the working language either from Catalan, English, Galego, Portuguese or Spanish.

This version was developed to run under the Windows environment and contains additional configuration features, including:

Language selection and Configuration— The options for “regional configuration” and “language selection” in the System menu will allow selection of language interfase, configuration of decimal points and other characteristics pertaining to the users’ geographic region. Once selected, a language will remain as default for menu and help interfases, but users may change the language option, at any time.

The Epidat 2.1 software package includes the following modules:

Standardization of rates— Allows data entry either manually or imported from *.DBF formatted files. It permits simultaneous standardization of as many rates as required, through the direct or indirect methods.

Sampling— Calculates the minimum sample size required for studies estimating prevalence and means, for case-control and cohort studies, and for verifying lot quality. It generates pseudo-random numbers.

Agreement— Analyzes agreement between two or more observers, with two or more classification categories. It also contrasts the equality hypothesis of kappa statistics.

Tables— Analyzes 2x2 tables from cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies, in simple or stratified tables. In matched case-control studies it allows up to 4 controls per case. It incorporates the Bootstrap method for calculation of confidence intervals. In mxn tables, it performs specific calculations if categories are ordered. It incorporates the Chandra-Sekar-Deming capture-recapture method and the Knox method for detecting clusters.

Diagnostic tests— Calculates sensitivity, specificity and predictive values for single or multiple, serial or parallel, diagnostic tests. When carrying out multiple test analysis, it performs calculations from either cell values or from sensitivity and specificity values from each test. It allows display of ROC curves calculating the area under the curve and the optimal cut-off point if prevalence and cost relations are available.

Inference— Allows hypothesis contrast of differences for means and proportions, with one or two, dependent or independent samples and calculates confidence intervals.

Prioritization— Proposes a simple method (CENDES/OPS) for priority setting in health based on user-defined indicators and areas.

Epidat 2.1 is a free distribution software developed by public institutions. Thus, further distribution in not only allowed but welcome, as well as any critique or comment that may help to improve future versions.
