Bogotá, Colombia, April 28, 2016 (PAHO/WHO) - The director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, is in Colombia this week for a four-day country visit.

Topping her agenda are meetings with high-level government officials and a kick-off event for Vaccination Week in the Americas on Saturday in Leticia, Amazonas. Etienne will also meet with local authorities in that department.

Accompanied by PAHO Representative Gina Watson, Etienne will meet with Minister of Health and Social Protection Alejandro Gaviria Uribe, members of his staff and representatives of the National Health Institute (INS) to exchange information on the Zika epidemic and PAHO support for the country's response.

Etienne will also meet with officials from Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Agency for Cooperation, with whom she will discuss PAHO's work in the country and the development of the joint country cooperation strategy, among other topics.

She also will meet with representatives of the United Nations system, of which PAHO is a part, and attend a meeting with the Andean Parliament.

Etienne has visited Colombia several times since taking office as PAHO director in February 2013. Last year she participated in the Third Regional Urban Health Forum in Medellín, co-organized by PAHO and Colombia's Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
